buried

We're here in Texas now.
But we're a little bit buried. (Can you find my husband in this picture?) We're waiting for a storage unit because we have too much stuff for a one bedroom.
We're also waiting for a pest control person.
Because I don't like cockroaches. Or mice.

I do like the tree outside my window, though. We've never had a tree before. It makes me feel refreshed, which is really important here in the Texas heat. We're making sure to find other ways to cool off--ice cream breaks work wonders.

But I'm wondering--do you have any suggestions for dealing with cockroaches? I think my 3 am potty break last night was the first time I've even seen a cockroach, and I have no idea what to do about it. I put all the dry food we bought in our microwave so the cockroaches can't get it, but it can't stay there. It's just not practical.

I am sorry about the cockroaches and mice and being buried, but I am glad that you made it safely to Texas. Tayler said that when he was in Taiwan, they put all of their opened food in the refrigerator to keep it away from cockroaches. I know it's not very practical either, but it is bigger than a microwave. :) Good luck!

oh I haaaaaate cockroaches! We had lots of them in our old house in Gustine - the garage was scary at night. Raid is your best friend in this situation. I think what my mom said is right, heat=bugs. My SIL in Georgia will attest to that.

Good luck with unpacking. It always looks like a daunting task in the beginning, but you will get through it! :)

I'm so sorry about the bugs. I have no idea how to deal with them.

But I'm glad you like the tree, and I'm sure everything will settle down soon.

Glad you are there and safe : )

Raid will be your best friend. We have also found while living in HI that you just really have to make sure you keep your apartment clean especially the kitchen! Do you get geckos? If you do, keep them cause they are good! Good Luck!

there isn't much you can do about cockroaches on the floor until you have your house sprayed but you can keep them off your counter tops by keeping it clean. And then once you have your apt sprayed for cockroaches then you may find dead ones every morning by doors (places that they enter the house). I've had to deal with roaches my entire life. but my parents had their house sprayed every month and we never had to deal with them on the inside because of that. so definitely spray your house.

Glad you made it there. Good luck with un-packing. Sotty about the critters. I don't tolerate critters in my home well either. have a pest control company come regularly. They usually guarantee no bugs so you can have them come back everytime you see one if need be.

Oops that should say sorry not sotty. That's what I get for typing in the dark.

Oh, I am so sorry about the bugs!! A few tips for living in the new climate/buggy area . . .

Go to the store and invest in a pack of clothespins, and use them to close all your cracker/ceral bags inside their boxes. It really helps keep the humidity from making them stale. And it will keep things from crawling inside.

Be very careful about things/piles on the floor, since bugs love to hide there, especially scorpions.

See if you can find any of the sticky spider traps (the kind people get for Hobo spiders). I have my mom send them to me from Idaho, since I can't find them here. I have the strategically located under furniture along walls (out of site, but in the path of bugs. It is a great way to catch what the spray doesn't kill.

If you go out of town, close all your drains, as this is where the big Palmetto bugs come from (the huge cockroaches). They love water, so don't ever flush them, they can swim.

With your dry goods, any time you buy a bag of flour, put in your freezer for a week (to kill anything - in the dry, cold weather, you can usually get away without doing this), and then store it in a rubbermaid container. I store my extra four and sugar bags in a bakery frosting tub - I got them free from a grocery store, and washed them out. They are airtight and a great way to store it and keep it safe from bugs.

I know that is a lot, but I hope it helps a little. Oh, I also found it was worse right after we moved in, since having the door opened and the boxes come in, actually brought the bugs. When you get into a house, I would bug bomb it before you move in, and then spray again afterwards.

Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions.

Becca,
It's so fun to move. I've done it 6 times in our marriage so far, and will do it again in 2 weeks. It's fun to start off new. Especially with a new litte one. Be sure to post pictures of the babies room when you get it finished. POST PICS OF YOUR TUMMY!!! I WANT TO SEE THE BABY BUMP!!
Love,
Lisa
